Coney Island Boardwalk - Brooklyn, NY

*This post was originally posted on our main blog on 11/07/2008 *

It was about a month ago when we decided to head out to Brooklyn to go to the NY Aquarium. The aquarium is actually on the southern part of the Coney Island boardwalk. We have heard so much about Coney Island, about the amusement parks, the famous Nathans hot dogs and all the summer memories people have talked about over the years. After the aquarium, we walked down the world famous boardwalk to see what all the hype is about.

First up is the much talked about Astroland Park, home to the famous wooden Cyclone roller coaster. It was built in the early 60s, with a 'space age' theme. After 45 years of providing countless children and adults fun filled summer days and nights, the Astroland finally closed it's doors to the last visitor on September 7, 2008. I'm a little bit bummed that we didn't get a chance to ride the Cyclone, but I'm sure Astroland will always live on in the childhood memories of many New Yorkers.

I don't know about you, but whenever we go to a carnival or somewhere with a carnival like atmosphere (like the boardwalks on AC and Jersey Shore), we MUST get some funnel cake and lemonade! I just love funnel cakes, it's so unhealthy yet so yummy :P

After the yummy funnel cake, we continued to walk down the boardwalk and here it is! Deno's Wonder Wheel Park! Back in the day, Coney Island was THE place to build the biggest and best of things. The Wonder Wheel is a 150ft tall ferris wheel, built in 1920. It soon became one of the icons of Coney Island. What's so special about this ferris wheel? Well, there are eight stationary cars on the outside of the wheel and sixteen cars that that swings and rolls back and forth on the inside. At such a height, it can be pretty scary. In 1989, the Wonder Wheel was officially declared as a NYC Landmark. So we headed down to ride the Wheel. It cost $6 per person for two rounds on the Wheel. Initially I wanted to try the swinging car but we ended up riding on the stationary car. Thank goodness we chose the stationary. I knew Kevin has a slight fear of heights but I didn't realized that it was so bad. His knuckles where practically turning white from holding on to the rails. So sweet of him though to not complain and rode the Wheel with me, even though it terrified him to death! We got a really great view of the Atlantic Ocean as well as the whole Coney Island Boardwalk. We could even see the Verrazano Suspension Bridge that links Brooklyn to Staten Island.

We saw the big Nathans signboard from the Wheel and took it as a sign that it's time for a late lunch! When you think of food in Coney Island, it has to be hotdogs! They claim that the hot dog was invented in Coney Island in 1870. Coney Island is also home to the world famous Nathans hot dog. It is also the site of the annual 4th of July Hotdog Eating Contest.

We bought two cheese dogs, some cheese fries and their original orangeade. Nothing beats biting into a hot juicy dog, with the salty breeze from the Atlantic Ocean blowing in your face.

We continued exploring the various games stalls and arcade places on the boardwalk. One of the funnier games we saw that day was Shoot the Freak. There was a guy running around, hiding behind various objects and you would try to shoot him with a paintball gun. Boy, I would hate to be that guy! Hahaha. We even saw a wedding down at the beach.

As the sun begins to set, it was time for us to head home. We had a whole lot of fun and seemed somewhat reluctant to leave. We were really glad we didn't let the season slip away and not visit this ever so famous summer destination. Until next year, goodbye Coney Island...see you next summer!

New York Aquarium - Brooklyn, NY

*This post was originally posted on our main blog on 10/23/2008 *

We have been wanting to visit the New York Aquarium for the longest time but never really got around to it. When we found out about Bank of America's "Museums on Us" promotion, we jumped on the opportunity to head out to Brooklyn to visit the aquarium. The "Museums on Us" promotion is pretty good actually. Anybody who has a Bank of America card, be it credit or debit, gains free admission to over 70 museums nationwide every first weekend of the month. The NY Aquarium happens to be one of the participating museums.

The NY Aquarium boast over 350 species of aquatic life, with exhibits featuring over 8,000 animals. It is located on the south section of the Coney Island boardwalk, just next to the Atlantic Ocean. Our day started off pretty early. We had no problems in finding the aquarium (just punch in the address in the GPS) and was really pleased to get a parking spot right next to the entrance in the aquariums parking lot. Feeling really happy about that, we wondered where all the other cars were. We found out later that if we were to drive a down the street, there were many other private parking lots and street parking that cost between $5 - $8 per day. We paid $12 at the aquarium. Oh well, at least we got to enter the aquarium for free ( Admission fee is $13 for adults and $9 for children). Another way to get in with a discounted ticket is to go on Friday. This is when they have Friday Afternoon Specials. You can gain admission by paying-what-you-wish. Keep this in mind if you are planning to visit the aquarium.

Here are some photos from the Conservation Hall as well as Glover Reef.

We then visited the Sea Cliffs. This is a 300 ft long rocky coastline that exhibits marine mammals (sea lions, seals, otters..etc), penguins and fishes. There is an outdoor section as well as a underwater viewing area.

Next up: the Aquatheater to watch a sea lion show.

Our last stop was the Alien Stingers exhibit. The whole exhibit is in total darkness. We managed to see all kinds of cool colors emitting from the jellyfish and other sea creatures.

Overall, we had a very fun and educational morning. I was really glad that we managed to pull ourselves out of bed early on a Saturday morning to visit the aquarium. After that, we decided to head out to the boardwalk to explore the ever famous Coney Island. What did we see? What did we do? Well, that's reserved for the next post :D

Demarest Farms - Hillsdale, NJ

* This post was originally posted on our main blog on 10/19/2008*

The temperature is getting cooler, the leaves are slowly changing it's colors...yup, fall is finally here! Only 13 more days to Halloween! It's time to take a drive up north to the countryside to pick out our Halloween pumpkin. After some research on pumpkin farms in the Northern NJ area, we decided on Demarest Farms in Hillsdale, NJ.

It's a relatively large, with a huge main farmhouse that sells all kinds of produce fresh from the farm. It's just the tail end of the apple season and there were all kinds of different apples for sale. They also had home made apple cider (mmmm, really yummy), candy apples, chocolate coated apples, apple pies, apple cinnamon donuts, apple jams...just about anything apple you can think of! Here is Kevin with some of the apples from the orchard nearby.

To get into the Halloween mood, they had an outdoor section of Halloween decorations as well as a 'scary' corn maze for kids and grown ups who thinks that they are still kids :P

We bought our tickets ($5 per person) for the hayride that will take us to the pumpkin patch from the main farmhouse. I think we got lucky, cos there wasn't a line for the hayride. From reviews online, it seems the wait for your turn can sometimes take as long as 45mins! The hayride took us along country roads, passing various apples and raspberry orchards. I enjoyed that ride tremendously, taking in the beauty of the fall colors and cool breeze in our faces. At last we arrived at a clearing and there were hundreds of pumpkins all over the place! This marks the beginning of the search of our perfect Halloween pumpkin :D

There were just so many to choose from!! After going thru what seems like millions of pumpkins, we found the one that we liked the best. It cost $6 per pumpkin, regardless of size or weight. Here is our perfect pumpkin, do you like it?? Now we have to lug it back on the hayride to the main farmhouse (trust me, its really heavy)

No la, not that one! It's so big I wouldn't even know how to carry it up to our apt! Our perfect pumpkin is below :D

After we got back to the farmhouse, we bought some cheeseburgers, potato pancakes, apple cider and root beer for lunch. They were all freshly made at the farm. What a wonderful lunch, everything seems to much nicer out in the country. Even the root beer taste so much better, eat yer heart out Mr A&W! Below are some of the stuff we bought from the farm.

  1. Our perfect pumpkin

  2. A basketful of golden delicious apples

  3. Home made apple cider

  4. Home made sodas ( root beer, diet creme, black cherry & birch beer)
Overall, it was a good experience for me as first time pumpkin picker. We had a great time away from the smoggy city and I can't wait for Christmas, that's when we shall return to pick our Christmas tree!!

The Bronx Zoo - Bronx, NY

* This post was originally posted on our main blog on 10/18/2008*

It was a nice summers day in Aug when we decided to visit the Bronx Zoo. It first opened it's gates to visitors in 1899 with 22 exhibits but grew to be the largest metropolitan zoo in America, home to a lil over 4000 animals! We bought our tickets online from the zoo's website. It's cheaper to get prepaid tickets online compared to buying them at the gates (you also get to cut the long line of visitors lining up).

We started our day by riding on the Skyfari, a cable that gives you a birds eye view of the entire zoo as well as the skyline of the Bronx.

The zoo is split into different sections, I'll just let the photos do the talking...

This is the newest exhibit at the zoo - Madagascar!

Lions, zebras, gazelles...they all roam the African Plains

Get ready for some monkeying around at Congo - the Gorilla Forest

We were really excited to visit Tiger Mountain but it was a lil disappointing, we only managed to see two tigers :(
We then took a shuttle across the other side of the zoo to Wild Asia. This is where we took the Bengali Express Monorail. It's an elevated open concept monorail that takes you through the jungles of Asia, really really interesting!
This is also where we ended our visit to the Bronx Zoo. I would definitely say that it was an afternoon well spent, will recommend it to anybody who is looking for something to do on a nice summers day!
